Twenty-two 7th and 8th grade students from SAA attended this year's Illinois Junior Classical League (IJCL) state convention at the Westin Hotel in Itasca, Illinois. SAA joined Latin students from 18 other Illinois schools in academic competitions, Certamen, arts, and other events related to the classics. SAA students placed 25 times in academic competitions including the categories: Latin Grammar, Roman History, Mythology, and Roman Private Life. One student placed first in Dramatic Interpretation of a Latin passage, and she also delivered a beautiful speech in front of the entire assembly of over 500 students. SAA students earned first place on Thursday night for a school spirit competition. This year's theme of the convention was, "Ubi concordia, ibi victoria," where there is unity there is victory. Agite Aquilae! (Go Eagles!)
Our intrepid SO teams did fabulously against 60 very competitive teams at the Wright State University Invitational last Saturday. Our Varsity team finished 10th overall (8 of the teams who beat us went to Nationals for their state last year), and they finished ahead of the 11th ranked team in the nation. Our JV team also did well. In direct competition, they finished 25th overall, meaning they defeated nearly half of the varsity teams in attendance!
Varsity won 1st in Air Trajectory, 8th in Crave The Wave, 6th in Crime Busters, 5th in Dynamic Planet, 1st in Green Generation, 6th in Invasive Species, 6th in Meteorology, 4th in Picture This, 5th in Reach For The Stars, and 4th in Wind Power.
JV won 7th in Green Generation, and 8th in Write It Do It.
Please join us in congratulating our hard-working, talented students and coaches! KABOOM!!!
It was a great day for SAA at IGSMA solo contest last Saturday. All participants received a Division 1 rating, with two students receiving a perfect score (1+)! Congratulations to all of the participants!
On Tuesday, February 2nd, seventh and eighth grade Certamen students participated in their final regional competition of the season. SAA's Varsity team placed first for the season, which qualifies them for the state competition in April. Our Junior Varsity team scored their most points yet this season.. Winning is always nice, but learning more and developing a love for the Classics is what Certamen is all about.
On Saturday January 30th, 30 Middle School students participated in the Latin School of Chicago Math Meet. This meet had 18 schools and up to 23 teams per grade participate. SAA had 8 teams, two per grade, participate at this competition.
5th Graders earned 3rd place as a team and one student earned 1st place for 5th grade Individuals.
6th Graders earned a 4th place team award.
8th Graders earned 2nd place team award.
Congratulations to all 30 students for months of hard work in order to prepare for this event!
