Math

Mr. Bonecutter has taught science and math, and has been a Science Olympiad coach to middle and high school students across the United States for over 20 years. He joined SAA’s faculty in 2012. As Science Olympiad Head Coach, he has led the team to many accomplishments, including 1st place in the region, 2nd place in Illinois, and 18th place at Nationals, among other accolades and honors.

He considers it a privilege to work with SAA’s motivated and amazing students. “Each day my students and I discover new ways to teach and learn together, and to feed our mutual passion for science and math. I love teaching and I cannot imagine doing anything else that is this fun and satisfying.”

Mr. Bonecutter obtained his BS in humanities and science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his masters in secondary education with an emphasis on middle school from Villanova University. Additionally, he obtained his teaching certification with cross cultural, language, and academic development (CLAD) and K-12 science and math education from California State University, East Bay. He is a member of both the National Science Teachers Association and the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics.

As a parent of two twice exceptional children, Mr. Bonecutter first made his way to SAA when his oldest son became a student. He served as a substitute teacher and a Science Olympiad Coach, and joined the staff of our Summer Adventures in Learning program. Shortly after, Mr. Bonecutter became a full time science and math teacher, and has continued to teach while coaching Science Olympiad and working on various in school committees.

Mr. Bonecutter has served as a writer and judge for the California Chemathon, and has served on accreditation committees reporting to the Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC), and the Pennsylvania Association of Independent Schools (PAIS). He has also been a mentor for the Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS) TEAMS Competition, obtaining a National Honorable Mention, and as a Rube Goldberg ™ Contest Teacher Mentor, receiving an Illinois Honorable Mention.

Outside of the classroom, you can find Mr. Bonecutter hiking, camping, biking, kayaking, and singing with the Faculty Choir.
