Enrichment Classes Descriptions
Below is the full list of classes offered during Summer Adventures for Sessions 1, 2 and 3. Please note that not every class is offered every session. Please refer to the tables above for classes offered specifically in Session 3.
A - C
3D Printing
3D Printing, empowered by 3Doodler, makes learning limitless as students make concepts come alive from 2D to 3D! Using 3Doodler’s 3D printing pens, students break down complex topics into hands-on, approachable concepts, bringing science, technology, engineering, math, and design concepts to life. 3Doodler bridges differences in learning styles and engages students in a way that promotes teamwork, creative thinking, self-expression, and focus. After only using 3Doodler’s 3D printing pens for a short time, students will become engineers, designers, and scientists in their own classrooms, camps, or learning groups. With hundreds of free stencils and lesson plans available on the3doodler.com/edu, students will engage in experiential learning in all subject areas for hours. Instructor: Nexplore
Archery
It's not summer camp without archery! Imagine aiming the arrow at the target like Princess Merida or Robin Hood. Summer camp is all about developing new skills and learning archery which provides opportunities to practice discipline, concentration and perseverance. It is a great feeling when campers (in some cases finally) can hit the bullseye because it was a testament to their hard work and dedication! Campers will learn the basic terminology, technique, and safety for archery. Each day includes practice rounds and challenge games like Target Tic Tac Toe and War of the Worlds. Due to the importance of maintaining a safe environment, campers must be prepared to follow all safety instructions. This class takes place outside (tent available for shade) but moves inside during inclement weather. Instructor: Joan Pinz
Awesome Applique: Crocheting & Embroidery
Join our sewing circle! It's "sew" much fun, once campers learn the basics of their creations! In this hands-on class, campers crochet or hand stitch an applique and sew it onto their favorite t-shirt/s or jeans! Campers will make their own comfy alphabet pillows and sewn our own name tags! They will get creative, hand stitching beautiful embroidery patterns on bracelets or even barrettes! The projects are endless! We like to think of these classes as a creative, crafty and expressive style of sewing! Instructor: Opal Perlow
Ballet & Contemporary Dance Expression
Twirl and whirl into the magic world of dance! Campers will learn the basics of ballet, such as arabesque and pirouettes, as well as the moves from contemporary dance such as kick-ball-change and fan kick. Your camper will explore different elements of choreography and incorporate these skills to create a dance piece that will be performed at the end of the session. Working with their dance class and the instructor, campers will select music, design a costume, and rehearse a piece until it is performance ready. Instructor: Allie Burdick
Broadway Bop
Lights, Cameras... Action! In this Broadway-inspired class, campers will learn the art of combining acting and dancing. Your camper will learn jazzy choreography to songs from award-winning hit Broadway musicals such as The Lion King, Matilda the Musical, or The Sound of Music, which will be a class decision. Once the class learns and practices, the group can perform a piece live at the end of the session. Instructor: Allie Burdick
Chemistry in Action
Campers will have a blast conducting hands-on experiments using common household items like baking soda, vinegar, food coloring, shaving cream, and cornstarch. We will create an exploding volcano, Oobleck, DIY lava lamps, different variations of slime, and more. Each day begins with a science read aloud, followed by a hands-on experiment and a journal reflection. Campers have the opportunity to mix, create, observe and analyze chemical reactions in a manner that they may not have the opportunity to do in a traditional, larger classroom setting. Experiments will repeat for all three sessions. Instructor: Christine Cheung
Chess Masters: Advanced Chess
Join us for a dynamic two week camp designed for advanced young chess players. Dive into strategic insights, tactical masterstrokes, and on Fridays, unleash your creativity with thrilling chess variants like Bughouse. Sharpen your skills in a fun and challenging environment. Class is designed for players rated between 500 and 1500, or players who are interested in competing in future tournaments. Instructor: Chess Forward LLC
Chess: Basics & Beyond
Beginner to Intermediate Players: Enter the world of chess this summer! Open to campers who are of beginning to intermediate playing levels and experience. This classic game of strategy is both fun and teaches important educational and life skills including concentration, logic, critical thinking, and sportsmanship. Beginner players will be introduced to the rules, moves, etiquette, and basic strategies of the game, while players with more experience will have opportunities to enhance their skills by mastering opening game theory, middle game tactics and end game combinations. Each day campers will receive instruction followed by friendly matches amongst campers of similar experience levels. Instructor: Chess-Ed
Chinese Experience
Travel to the far east for our fun and engaging Chinese summer program! Your camper will be introduced to a variety of Chinese customs, history, cultural traditions (Holiday/Festive) and the Chinese language. The campers will be taught Chinese characters through reading stories, playing games, calligraphy (Chinese brush) and creating art projects. Campers will also have the opportunity to sing Chinese songs and read traditional Chinese poems. This approach will help teach your camper the differences between Chinese and Western culture and customs. Most of the learning materials will be designed by the course instructor to best suit your student based on their age and learning level. Instructor: Ahhsia Bigelow
Circuit Playground: Introduction to Electronics
Game on! Enter the world of physical computing! In this project-based course, each camper will be given a circuit playground microcontroller and the basic skills necessary to code it to sense its surroundings. They will design how they want to use the temperature, motion, sound, or touch information to create games, wearable electronics, or whatever they can come up with. Campers will get to take their projects home at the end of camp in order to continue expanding on their knowledge of electronics and coding. We will use block coding for all projects, and no experience is necessary. Instructor: Jan Wieczorek
