Enrichment Classes Descriptions
3D Printing Lab
Experience the technology that makes 3D printing possible. Campers learn how to use computer-aided design software and the many applications of 3D printing in our world today through making a variety of unique creations. In past summers, through teacher led lessons campers have created keychains, snowflakes and fidget spinners. Campers also have designated time to design and print their own creative projects. By the end of the session campers come away with the necessary information to understand and run a 3D printer, and problem solve printer and design issues along the way. This is a class for those who want to dig deep, problem-solve, and create! Teacher: Mike Bott
Archery
It's not summer camp without archery! Imagine aiming the arrow at the target like Princess Merida or Robin Hood. Summer camp is all about developing new skills and learning archery provides opportunities to practice discipline, concentration and perseverance. It is a great feeling when campers (in some cases finally) can hit the bullseye because it was a testament to their hard work and dedication! Campers will learn the basic terminology, technique, and safety for archery. Each day includes practice rounds and challenge games like Tic Tac Toe and War of the Worlds. Due to the importance of maintaining a safe environment, campers must be prepared to follow all safety instructions. This class takes place outside (tent available for shade) but moves inside during inclement weather. Teacher: Joan Pinz
Bedazzling Beads
Beads offer endless possibilities and colors that transform ordinary objects into decorative works of art. Explore the beading process of making jewelry (e.g. necklaces, bracelets, pins, and earrings), keychains, bookmarks, sun catchers, ornaments, and critters. Plus learn simple wire wrappings of semi-precious stones. Create your own beaded masterpieces! Teacher: Kim Darling
Build a Play
Calling all actors! Led by artists from Northlight Theatre, Build a Play teaches theatre skills such as voice, movement, and imagination with an emphasis on collaboration and play. Campers will work together to create a new play inspired by a familiar story or theme that they will share in an in-person or virtual informal performance at the end of the session. Build a Play introduces campers to theatre skills in voice and movement, increasing self-confidence and collaborative skills through the adaptation of familiar stories and devising of new work. Build a Play is run by Northlight Theatre, a professional, non profit theatre company that provides arts education programming to over 3,500 students with a spirit of collaboration to encourage students’ artistic growth through self-expression and unbridled creativity. Learn more about Northlight Theatre at https://northlight.org/education-community-programs/. Teacher: Northlight Theatre
Chemistry in Action
Campers will have a blast conducting hands-on experiments using common household items like baking soda, vinegar, food coloring, shaving cream, and cornstarch. We will create an exploding volcano, Oobleck, DIY lava lamps, different variations of slime, and more. Each day begins with a science read aloud, followed by a hands-on experiment and a journal reflection. Campers have the opportunity to mix, create, observe and analyze chemical reactions in a manner that they may not have the opportunity to do in a traditional, larger classroom setting. Teacher: Christine Cheung
Chess
Enter the world of chess this summer! Open to campers of all playing levels and experience, this classic game of strategy is both fun and teaches important educational and life skills including concentration, logic, critical thinking, and sportsmanship. Beginner players will be introduced to the rules, moves, etiquette, and basic strategies of the game, while players with more experience will have opportunities to enhance their skills by mastering opening game theory, middle game tactics and end game combinations. Each day campers will receive instruction followed by friendly matches amongst campers of similar experience levels. Teacher: Kate Bauer
Choose Your Own Adventure
Reading a good book allows you to step into another world and experience life from a character's perspective. Choose-your-own adventure books take that to the next level by allowing you to make choices for the characters that impact the direction of the story. In this class, campers will explore various genres before authoring and illustrating their own choose-your-own adventure book! Choose-your-own adventure books help us think carefully about our decision-making (choices and consequences) in the virtual world, a skill that has many applications in reality. Writing these books also encourages us to think about the development of plot and characters and how to consider multiple alternatives, all while strengthening writing skills. Teacher: Erika Kroll-McCombs
Clay Studio
Clay is different from any other art medium; it requires an understanding of the three dimensional world! Clay Studio incorporates discussions of shape, form, and perspective, with opportunities for campers to design their own pieces. Previous projects have ranged from functional pieces such as cups, bowls, and luminaries to non-functional pieces such as animals, tiles, and monsters. In the beginning of each session, themes and project ideas are created based upon group interests. Once a consensus is reached on the theme, campers begin experimenting with a variety of building techniques while learning to think about their ideas and adapt along the way. This class is all about creativity, self-expression, and inspiring each other! In addition to creating incredible ceramic pieces, many campers find the process itself the most rewarding element of the class. Teacher: Natalia Broz-Andreou
Coding Foundations
Interested in computers, online games, and the internet and want to learn how it all works? Coding Foundations is an introduction to the vast world of coding, reduced to the fundamentals that younger campers need to master. Through whole class instruction and self-pacing, campers will dive into block coding and simple programming scripts within the context of popular games like Minecraft and other coding tools. Problem solving, logic, and critical thinking will be on full display! Teacher: Mike Bott
Fantasy Sports
Did you know that over 45 million Americans play fantasy sports every year! There's no debate that fantasy sports is one of the most widely played games in America. And now you'll have a chance to draft your own teams and compete against your fellow campers! If getting the chance to win your fantasy league isn't enough motivation, maybe you'll be interested in the many tangible and transferable benefits, including developing skills in: research and information gathering, numerical analysis and economics, and negotiation skills. Play fantasy with us this summer! Teacher: Mike Bott
Fencing
Fencing, known as a game of living chess, challenges your mind and body to work in unison to create the perfect combination of attack and defense maneuvers. Campers are safely and correctly taught fundamental footwork, hand eye coordination, and bladework techniques which help build balance and coordination. Each session incorporates group warm ups, explanations and stories about fencing, exercises and games to help practice, and open bout with instruction. All levels and experience welcome, and all equipment (masks, jackets, gloves, and foils) is provided. Teacher: Maria Trella
Film Music
In this class, we will be exploring the power and importance of music in movies! Why do certain movies use certain music? How do they know what type of music to use? Campers will be exposed to a variety of different genres and will learn about musical elements that make a song sound a certain way. They will write stories that match what they are hearing, and they will create their own music using technology that corresponds to different movie scenes. Campers will get to use their creative energy and step into the role of director/producer/music supervisor to make decisions based on what music they believe should be put in the movie! Teacher: Lainey Hewitt
Gliders and Flight Science
Throughout history in all cultures there has always been a fascination with flight. Campers will learn the basic principles of flight and build a variety of gliders using common materials, such as paper, straws, and foam sheets.
