Zach has devoted his career to making a positive impact on children and families from all walks of life. While pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a service-learning trip to New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina set Zach on a journey to lift up marginalized communities and be an agent for positive change.
After graduating from UW-Madison in 2009, Zach joined AVODAH: The Jewish Service Corps where he engaged in anti-poverty work, community building, and leadership development training in Washington, D.C. Zach engrained himself in the community, volunteering as a mentor, reading tutor, and assisting veterans with the transition back to civilian life. Over the next three years, Zach worked in several capacities at local education and human service organizations, including the D.C. Public Schools Central Office, the city’s largest nonprofit after school provider, a public interest justice center, and a leading education-focused think tank.
Zach moved to Chicago in 2012 and continued his educational research for the D.C. based think tank. Soon after he joined a social services agency in a grant writing and operations role. With an increasing interest in Chicago's startup scene, Zach took his nonprofit skills and passion for helping students succeed to a recently formed edTech company, and he spent a year helping the company beta test its product and launch pilots across the country. In the summer of 2015, Zach transitioned back to the nonprofit world for a short stint with the YMCA before joining SAA in the fall.
As Director of Auxiliary Programs, Zach is a partner in setting the strategy and executing all operations for SAA's vast array of auxiliary programming. Zach is the Director of SAA's summer enrichment and recreation program, Summer Adventures in Learning, which serves over 350 children from SAA and the community. He is the administrative point person for extracurricular activities, extended day child care, the school lunch program, our Chicago to Des Plaines student transportation service, and facility rentals. Additionally, Zach is an active member of the school’s Safety and Security Task Force and the Compensation Task Force.
Zach and his wife Abby (an Assistant Director of an overnight summer camp) live in the Chicago area with their two daughters. When Zach's not at SAA, you can find him at a Jewish Council for Youth Services board meeting, volunteering as a mentor, tuning in to a Boston (where he was raised) or UW-Madison sporting event, and hanging out with his family and dog, Badger.
