Mrs. Maliwanag joined SAA in 2013 and currently teaches 5th and 6th grade science.
Educating the gifted and talented student population is a passion for Mrs. Maliwanag. As a child she was identified as a gifted student and dreamed of a place like SAA - a supportive community where she would be challenged and enjoy learning. She continued to pursue her passion, and obtained her bachelors in elementary education with a science endorsement from Loyola University Chicago, and her masters in gifted education from Northeastern Illinois University. Professionally, she is a member of the Illinois Association for Gifted Children, the National Association for Gifted Children and Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted.
“Education is an extremely valuable opportunity to experience and to acquire great knowledge that I strongly believe is important for all individuals. I became a teacher in order to passionately inspire, challenge, and empower children to reach beyond their academic potential. I became a teacher in order to provide a pathway for the development of a child through advocacy, exhibiting support, and fostering inquiry so that the knowledge and skills children learn will be incorporated in their lives as individuals of society. I became a teacher in order to positively contribute to the academic achievement of all children so that they are life-long learners as an entity that embodies the future.”
As one of the Head Coaches for SAA's Science Olympiad team, Mrs. Maliwanag works to encourage students' interest in science. Science Olympiad is an extracurricular program that involves 23 separate challenging events, covering a variety of topics in science, such as heredity, genetics, birding, and chemistry, and allows students to delve more deeply into the different facets of science, and experience the scientific process first hand. As a Head Coach, Mrs. Maliwanag manages the planning and scheduling of practices, coordinates in and out-of-state competitions, and of course, teaches students anything and everything about science!
Outside of SAA, Mrs. Maliwanag enjoys spending time with her family and friends. She loves traveling, and playing sports such as basketball, volleyball, softball, tennis, and golf. You can also find her singing, dancing, photographing, and practicing cosmetology.
