SAA is fortunate to have Darlene Neumann as our Librarian, dedicated to teaching students the value and joys of reading and improving their reading skills through lessons and hands-on activities. Mrs. Neumann encourages the exploration of books and reading in SAA’s library with over 16,600 books for our students to discover.
Mrs. Neumann has published a variety of articles and lesson plans on storytelling in the classroom, as well as presenting with the National Storytelling Network, the American Library Association, the American Association of School Librarians, the International Reading Association Presenter, and the Central East Asia Region of Overseas Schools. Mrs. Neumann is also the founder and first chair of YES! (Youth, Educators, and Storytellers), a Special Interest Group of the National Storytelling Network.
Mrs. Neumann earned her BA in Elementary Education from Concordia University and an MLS in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois. She has over 40 years of experience working in education in Illinois and at the Hong Kong International School. She has been a part of the SAA community since 2013.
Mrs. Neumann volunteers as a coach for SAA’s Science Olympiad team, and is the faculty advisor for the Student Library Assistance Board (SLAB). You can usually also find her sewing and designing costumes for SAA’s dramatic and musical productions. She is active in her church and is a professional storyteller, performing with her husband as Two Voices Storytelling.
