Physical education is not only about fitness. Being active and learning games give students benefits that help them think and function better in their everyday lives in a way that can’t typically be achieved in a regular classroom.

This doesn't mean teachers and students need to rely on just classic sports and games typically seen in PE classes around the country, however. SAA physical education teachers Chris Trella and Steven Peter are always seeking ways to maintain the fundamentals, while adding creativity, strategy, and more fun.
In the SAA gym, on the playground, and on the field, it is not uncommon to see an abundance of pool noodles. Mr. Trella and Mr. Peter have been using pool noodles in new and inventive games that they have created to stimulate both creativity and movement in our students. Together they have developed a resource for teachers, camp counselors, and anyone leading activities with kids looking for something new.

“15 Games With Pool Noodles” is available on iTunes and offers parents and educators new and safe game ideas using pool noodles. Readers get detailed instructions for each game, and even video demonstrations featuring our very own SAA students. Each activity is also rated in areas like locomotor skill, cooperative learning or cardiovascular fitness levels. “We wanted to create a book that had not only rules and explanations, but also videos of the games and activities. We aimed to provide fellow educators with a full scale resource for fun games our kids would enjoy, and from which they learn so much,” said Mr. Peter. If you’d like to meet Mr. Trella and Mr Peter and learn more about what they’re doing at SAA to keep students moving and engaged, bring your child to our Interactive Open House on January 26.
