Science & Arts Academy Welcomes New Assistant Head of School

Science & Arts Academy (SAA) announces the appointment of Dr. Ari Frede as the new Assistant Head of School. Earlier this year, SAA embarked on a nationwide search and Dr. Frede’s embrace of the school’s mission and philosophy stood out to Head of School Tim Costello, SAA faculty, and administration. 

Assistant Head of School Dr. Ari Frede will  work closely with Head of School Tim Costello and serve as the Chief Instructional Officer, responsible for the supervision and support of all teachers and instructional staff. In addition, his role will include supporting teachers and promoting a culture of growth that meaningfully advances SAA’s priorities and strategic initiatives.

We enjoyed hosting Snapshot: Enriching and Extending Reading for Your Gifted Child with Dr. Ama Thompson, Student Support Coordinator at Science & Arts Academy, as part of our Snapshot event series. These 30-minute virtual events are designed for the parents of gifted children and are free and open to the public.  

Dr. Thompson’s presentation touched on the elements of reading development, especially as they relate to the characteristics of gifted readers, and how parents can enrich the reading comprehension of their children through conversation.

We enjoyed hosting Snapshot: Understanding Giftedness at All Ages with Kathleen Nilles, Parent Services and Communications Manager for the National Association of Gifted Children, as part of our Snapshot event series. These 30-minute virtual events are designed for the parents of gifted children and are free and open to the public.  

Kathleen touched on what parents should look for at the various ages of their child’s development from toddlerhood through high school, and offered a wealth of insight on everything from expanding a child’s interests to social development.  Watch a recording of the presentation »

SAA teachers Amy Jacobs and Steve Bayer presented at the National Association for Gifted Children 67th Annual Convention, an event that annually draws gifted education teachers, administrators, graduate students, professionals and parents from around the country.

Head of School Awarded Fellowship

Tim Costello, Head of School at Science & Arts Academy, has been awarded a fellowship for the 2020 Klingenstein Heads of Schools Program, at Columbia University’s Teachers College. Mr. Costello is one of only 20 to be accepted to the program each year, selected from a competitive pool of school heads from all around the world.

Parent Education Events at SAA

We enjoyed hosting Parenting Gifted Children at Science & Arts Academy last week. Professional counselor and author Catherine Gruener talked about the many common parenting challenges and strategies while leading some hands-on parent training exercises.  

SAA faculty speakers Carolyn Manley and Tina Centineo shared more on what schools can do to support the social and emotional needs of gifted children.

Meet Our SEL Coach

Mrs. Centineo joined SAA in 2012 and currently teaches Language Arts to students in third through fifth grade, and serves as the school's Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Coach.  As SEL Coach, she ensures that SEL best practices are integrated into classrooms and family partnerships.

SEL enhances students' capacity to integrate skills, attitudes, and behaviors to deal effectively and ethically with daily tasks and challenges. By providing targeted resources and coaching for teachers, she helps identify the SEL needs in their classrooms and to implement SEL seamlessly across the curriculum. Tina also works closely with parents to establish a strong school-home SEL connection.

As Director of Auxiliary Programs, Zach Elkin is a partner in setting the strategy and execution of all operations for SAA's vast array of auxiliary programming, which includes the many extracurricular options SAA students take part in. He is the administrative point person for all extracurricular activities, extended day child care, the school lunch program, and ur Chicago to Des Plaines student transportation service.

​An integral part of the Student Support Team, School Counselor Carolyn Manley brings over 30 years of teaching and counseling experience to SAA. 

Carolyn joined SAA in 2013 and from day one, she has worked to build Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) concepts and frameworks into our curriculum and school culture. The SAA counseling program is focused on identifying and alleviating obstacles so that children can work to their fullest potential. Carolyn works with students in individual, small group, and classroom settings, helping students build skills in areas like emotional management, stress management, self-awareness, and communication.  ​
