Cultural Celebrations & Library Visit

5/26/2015

1st and 2nd graders enjoyed a special cultural celebration, to culminate the end of their study of Marco Polo. Students rotated around to 8 different parent-led stations to learn more about counties in Europe and Asia. Student learned history, created origami, ate food, played games, and more!

Preschool through Kindergarten students enjoyed a visit from a children's librarian from the Des Plaines Public Library. They participated in songs and stories, and received information about the library's summer reading program.

7th Grade Field Trip & Ducks!

5/14/2015

We are excited to report that we now have seven baby ducklings at SAA, and the Junior Kindergarten class was lucky enough to watch two hatch right before their very eyes during class! Our ducks are much more than cute, fuzzy visitors. They teach children about the life cycle, compassion for living things, how living things grow and change, and how important it is to take care of our planet's creatures.
After reading “The House on Mango Street,” 7th graders enjoyed a field trip to the Pilsen neighborhood for a mural tour, followed by lunch at a local Mexican restaurant and a visit to the National Museum of Mexican Art.

Writer/Illustrator Debbie Ridpath Ohi

5/5/2015

We were delighted to welcome author/illustrator Debbie Ridpath Ohi to SAA! Jr. K - 2nd grade students had the pleasure of listening to her talk about her career and her new book, Where Are My Books? She was so amazed at the artwork throughout the halls of SAA that she even tweeted about it. If you are interested in purchasing an autographed book, a limited supply are still available.

During science class, kindergartners assembled the remote control function of their Rover and ran it through an obstacle course. Students enjoyed following the circuit blueprints and watching the energy from the gears illuminate the lights.

Visiting Authors

3/14/2015

On Thursday, March 12th, Broadway veterans and authors Andrew Keenan Bolger and Kate Wetherheadwill visited SAA to talk to 3rd - 8th graders.  Their first book for younger readers, Jack and Louisa: Act 1, has just been released. ("I just finished it and loved it!" -Mrs. Kraut)  Mr. Keenan-Bolger has appeared on Broadway in "Newsies," "Mary Poppins," "Seussical, "and "Beauty and the Beast."  Ms. Wetherhead originated the role of Chutney in "Legally Blonde: The Musical" and is a fixture on the New York stage. Together they created the popular web series, "Submissions Only," which was hailed as one of Entertainment Weekly's "Top 10 Things We Love."  The authors happily signed and personalized copies of Jack and Louisa on day of their visit.

SAA was represented by four students at the State Chess Tournament this past weekend. Congratulations to all participants, as well as one in particular for winning 2nd place in State in his category! This is the first time SAA has participated in the state chess tournament, and given our strong initial showing, we're confident our involvement will continue to grow in the years ahead.

Kindergartners put their battery operated Rover together with electronic snap circuits and a print outlining how to build a circuit with sound and light!
