Mr. Peter works with students across both the lower and middle schools at Science & Arts Academy as the Physical and Health Education teacher.  Additionally, he is a Student Council Advisor, a Jump Rope for Heart Challenge coordinator, and manages the school-wide Field Day each year. SAA students who take the Metra train from Chicago are also accompanied each day in the SAA shuttle by Mr. Peter.

Mr. Peter has worked in education for the last 18 years, starting his career at a therapeutic day school helping students with behavioral and emotional disorders thrive in school. Mr. Peter came to SAA in 2005 and continues to bring awareness to social emotional learning and its connection to team sports.

He approaches the Physical and Health Education curriculum with goals in developing, evolving, and practicing differentiation in athletics. Mr. Peter helps students play and learn within various levels of intensity and competition in line with his personal philosophy of achieving maximum participation, and fun, for students. “I enjoy the challenge of bringing children with diverse social and physical abilities together in a safe and healthy way to help each reach his or her potential.“

Steven graduated from Illinois State University earning a BS in Physical Education with a minor in Music (vocal performance), and is currently pursuing an MS in Gifted Education from Northeastern Illinois University. He has travelled through Europe as a vocalist and is an accomplished musician. Very active in community theater, he brings the same passion, enthusiasm and energy to the day-to-day at SAA. “I love seeing children get 'hooked' on an activity, game or sport.”

Mr. Peter is a published author of "15 Games with Pool Noodles” as well as coach for the girls volleyball team at Maine West High School. In his free time he enjoys travelling, adventuring and camping.
