Olympiad *Please
note that SO is a special three-hour class so campers will not take any other
enrichment classes that session. |
5-8 |
Experience the technology that makes 3D printing possible. Campers learn how to use computer-aided design software and the many applications of 3D printing in our world today through making a variety of unique creations. In past summers, through teacher led lessons campers have created keychains, snowflakes and fidget spinners. Campers also have designated time to design and print their own creative projects. By the end of the session campers come away with the necessary information to understand and run a 3D printer, and problem solve printer and design issues along the way. This is a class for those who want to dig deep, problem-solve, and create! Grades: 4-8 | Teacher: Julie Lettner (Session 1), Mike Bott (Session 2/3)
Adventures in Architecture
Using everyday objects, campers in the younger section will explore some of the big ideas of architecture through daily design challenges as well as a one-week building project in which they’ll build a model of a castle or a doll house. Campers in the older section will dive deeper into the math and physics of architecture and building. They’ll have one week of daily design challenges and experiments and one week with a big building project, designing and building a scale model of their choosing. Everyone can take home their builds after the session is over! Grades: 3-8 | Teacher: Catherine May Katauskas (Session 3)
Archery
It's not summer camp without archery! Imagine aiming the arrow at the target like Princess Merida or Robin Hood...From the first day, campers will learn the basic terminology, technique, and safety for archery. Each day includes practice rounds and group challenge games like Tic Tac Toe and War of the Worlds. Due to the importance of maintaining a safe environment, campers must be prepared to follow all safety instructions. This class takes place outside (tent available for shade) but moves inside during inclement weather. Grades: 1-8 | Teacher: Joan Pinz (Session 1/2/3)
Bedazzling Beads
Beads offer endless possibilities and colors that transform ordinary objects into decorative works of art. Explore the beading process of making jewelry (e.g. necklaces, bracelets, pins, and earrings), keychains, bookmarks, sun catchers, ornaments, and critters. Plus learn simple wire wrappings of semi-precious stones. Create your own beaded masterpieces! Grades: 2-8 | Kim Darling (Session 2/3)
Board Game Bonanza
Take your board “game” to the next level! Campers will learn to play new games, work on their strategic skills, and have fun. Each game will be taught as a whole group, then practiced in smaller groups. Following each game, campers will have the opportunity to discuss the specifics: what did they like/dislike? What strategies worked? Is there anything they would change? Examples of games include Settlers of Catan, Patchwork, Kingdomino, Ticket to Ride, Karuba, and more! Grades: 4-8 | Teacher: Bethany Mullins (Session 3)
Bucket Band
Ever listen to a song and find yourself tapping your pencil or playing some air drums? Do you like the sound of the bass beat in your favorite tune? You might be the perfect Bucket Band Drummer! Come join the fun making music with buckets, chairs, and other found sounds this summer. We will work on drumming basics, making music as a team, and have a great time making some fabulous noise. Grades: 4-8 | Teacher: Beverly Preuss (Session 1/3)
Build a Play
Build a Play introduces campers to theatre skills in voice and movement, increasing self-confidence and collaborative skills through the adaptation of familiar stories and devising of new work. Each session ends with a final informal presentation with camper created original plays. Build a Play is run by Northlight Theatre, a professional, non profit theatre company that provides arts education programming to over 3,500 students with a spirit of collaboration to encourage students’ artistic growth through self-expression and unbridled creativity. Grades: 3-8 | Teacher: Ron Solberg (Session 1/2), Kate Bauer (Session 3)
Choose Your Own Adventure Books
Reading a good book allows you to step into another world and experience life from a character's perspective. Choose-your-own adventure books take that to the next level by allowing you to make choices for the characters that impact the direction of the story. In this class, campers will explore various genres before authoring and illustrating their own choose-your-own adventure book! Choose-your-own adventure books help us think carefully about our decision-making (choices and consequences) in the virtual world, a skill that has many applications in reality. Writing these books also encourages us to think about the development of plot and characters and how to consider multiple alternatives, all while strengthening writing skills. Grades: 4-8 | Teacher: Erika Kroll-McCombs (Session 2/3)
Clay Studio
Clay is different from any other art medium; it requires an understanding of the three dimensional world! Clay Studio incorporates discussions of shape, form, and perspective, with opportunities for campers to design their own pieces. Previous projects have ranged from functional pieces such as cups, bowls, and luminaries to non-functional pieces such as animals, tiles, and monsters. In the beginning of each session, themes and project ideas are created based upon group interests. Once a consensus is reached on the theme, campers begin experimenting with a variety of building techniques while learning to think about their ideas and adapt along the way. This class is all about creativity, self-expression, and inspiring each other! In addition to creating incredible ceramic pieces, many campers find the process itself the most rewarding element of the class.
