Thalia Tarsinos teaches middle school language arts and also serves as a middle school Advisor at Science & Arts Academy. She is passionate about teaching children and believes in “educating the gifted child by focusing on her/his areas of strength and passion."
After obtaining her Bachelor of Arts in Secondary English Education from DePaul University in 1995, Ms. Tarsinos began her teaching career in a therapeutic school setting, where she worked with high school students and taught English, history, and various other subjects. This experience was life-changing and continues to be a point of reference for her in her teaching. In 1997, Ms. Tarsinos began teaching high school English in Chicago Public Schools, where she also coached cheerleading and sponsored other extracurricular activities.
Later she took a break from the classroom to pursue her Master of Arts in Theatre from the University of Illinois at Chicago, graduating in 2002. Ms. Tarsinos worked at the Lyric Opera of Chicago during this time while also training professionally on the stage. She was a featured solo performer at venues throughout Chicago where she performed excerpts from her original one-woman show, Can You Tell Me How to Get to Where I Started. Ms. Tarsinos also founded her own theatre company, fragileforce, through which she produced and directed women solo performers and their original work. She has written a screenplay and various other one acts and is currently working on a book of poetry.
In 2000, Ms. Tarsinos discovered SAA, which reignited her passion for teaching. She continued to perform, direct, and produce professionally while teaching both drama and Language Arts. In 2011, Ms. Tarsinos returned to DePaul University and completed her Master of Education in Literacy and Specialized Instruction. She holds her State of Illinois Professional Educator License, with endorsements in Reading Specialist, Secondary Education, English, Middle School, Language Arts, Theatre/Drama, Social Science, and General Science.
Ms. Tarsinos is the founder, and head coach for SAA’s cross-country team. In 2019, she became a 200-hour certified yoga teacher through Breathe For Change, a national program specifically for educators with a focus on yoga and Social Emotional Learning. Most recently, Ms. Tarsinos received her certification in Trauma Informed Youth Yoga through Yoga Ed and her 50 hour Yin Yoga certification through Santosha Institute in Bali. She is also an AFPA certified Health and Wellness Coach.
Ms. Tarsinos enjoys teaching and practicing yoga and has competed in various triathlons and 5Ks. She is an avid reader, writer, performer, and the mother of two amazing young men. She considers herself a life-long learner and is always seeking new knowledge and perspective.
